Plan for Change in Sandwell: Taking Back Our Streets
Safer streets, cleaner neighbourhoods, and communities free from the blight of anti-social behaviour are core to what Labour is delivering — nationally through the Plan for Change, and locally in Sandwell through a sustained programme of investment and enforcement.
Anti-Social Behaviour Team: Doubled in Size
Sandwell’s dedicated anti-social behaviour (ASB) team has grown from 17 to 39 officers — more than doubling in size — backed by a £1 million-plus investment. This expanded capacity means the council can respond more quickly and more effectively when residents report problems.
£1.5 Million CCTV Investment: 62 New Cameras
Sandwell has invested £1.5 million in CCTV infrastructure across Wednesbury and West Bromwich, adding 62 new cameras to the borough-wide network — deterring crime, supporting police investigations, and providing reassurance to residents.
Fly-Tipping: Tough Enforcement and 34 New Recycling Hubs
Fixed Penalty Notices of up to £1,000 can be issued to those caught dumping waste illegally. Since October 2025, 20 penalties totalling £12,200 have been issued. At the same time, 34 new recycling hubs have been created across the borough to make responsible waste disposal easier for everyone.
The Safer Sandwell Partnership
All of this activity sits within the Safer Sandwell Partnership — the multi-agency structure that brings together the council, West Midlands Police, the fire service, the NHS, and the voluntary sector to coordinate action on crime, disorder, and community safety.
Cabinet Member Cllr Suzanne Hartwell leads Sandwell’s neighbourhood safety work, ensuring that residents’ concerns are heard and acted upon.
National Backing
Nationally, Labour’s Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee is ensuring that every community has access to dedicated local officers. The Crime and Policing Bill will introduce new Respect Orders to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour. Record numbers of dangerous weapons have been removed from our streets.
